I’m celebrating my blog’s one year birthday (which was October 21) by giving away a copy of Kathy Hester’s cookbook, The Slow Cooker Vegan. I won’t be giving away my much-used copy, however. Kathy has generously offered to send a pristine copy directly to the winner of this giveaway.
I’ve been cooking from Kathy’s book for a while now and have talked it up in some earlier posts like Other People’s Food (& Drink) Part 2 and Maple Pumpkin Spice Latte (for the Slow Cooker). That’s why I’m especially pleased to be offering a copy of this wonderful resource. One could cook from this book all year long. Kathy makes everything, and I mean everything in the slow cooker: brownies, fondue, beverages, seitan, granola, smoked tofu and of course, oatmeal, soups, stews and curries. I have it direct from the source that she owns 20 (maybe more?) slow cookers. Puts my measly three to shame.
There are lots of ways to enter the giveaway – just scroll down to the bottom of this post and climb into the Rafflecopter. Unfortunately, my freebie WordPress site does not allow for the cool Rafflecopter widget, but the link below will get you where you need to go. The contest ends November 19 and I’ll announce the winter on November 20.
Oh and by the way, Kathy has another cookbook – The Great Vegan Bean Book: Lentil, Legumes, and Peas Galore! – coming out in June 2013. I’ve already pre-ordered my copy!
And now onto some of the tasty things I made from The Slow Cooker Vegan:
One year ago today: Wild Rice & Dried Cherry Cookies
One year and one day ago: Label Conscious
Okay, now you’ve got me going. I’ve only just cracked open my copy and made one recipe. I can see this book is going to be a winter staple!!! Everything looks so good!!!
Everything I’ve made so far – and that has been quite a few things – have been delicious. Plus I always feel very self-satisfied knowing something is cooking away while I’m doing something else ;-).
That’s the brilliance of slow cookers! And hence the reason you and I own multiples…. 😉
All of your photos looks so appetising! Great giveaway, too.
Enter the giveaway, Lorna!
Thank you Annie but I feel others would benefit more. I have a slow cooker that is perfectly pristine – never used!
Then again, maybe if I had a cookbook I’d use it…..
That’s right, Lorna!! Fire up that slow cooker!
This book is awesome, I gave one away alongside an Indian Chickpea Quinoa Stew recipe almost a year ago. I still go back to this book often!
Winter makes me want to slow cook everything 😉 – so I’m sure my copy of this cookbook will be dog-eared by February! Thanks for the link – sounds like a delicious stew!!
I don’t want a copy because I also have a much used copy of her book as well. I just wanted to say that your photos are just beautiful. I might have to put the Thai Coconut Pumpkin soup on my list for the end of the week.
Thank you!! I appreciate that. It was a lot of fun spending a week cooking solely from Kathy’s book. It’s a keeper for sure! And the soup – seriously – outstanding. (And SO easy!)
I’m new to vegan cooking. – and still am looking for ideas. – I have a slow cooker and think this book would be something I would use, since I hear great reviews and the pictures here look delicious.
Catherine, it’s a really good one to have in your vegan cookbook arsenal! I love being able to put everything in the pot, turn it on and forget about it until dinner (or lunch…or breakfast). Plus Kathy is a sweetheart ;-).
This would be the perfect excuse to purchase a new slow cooker! Our old one is, well, old. It works fine, so I haven’t been able to convince the hubs we need a new one, but if I started using it more, I could probably convince him of the benefits of a timer and better temp control. (Our current ancient model only has off, low, and high.)
Here’s the thing…this book convinced me that I needed big, medium and small slow cookers…Oy. I use them ALL, though! Anyway – good luck getting a newer model (not the hubs, the slow cooker 😉 )!
This book looks fabulous! The recipes will warm up winter!
Yep – exactly right! PERFECT for this time of year!
I have made vegan cake in the slow cooker and it was AMAZING! Would love to win this book but I seem to have problems entering contests from your site.
I’m sorry, Deanne! When you click the link at the bottom of the post, what happens? It should take you to the Rafflecopter site. I haven’t heard of any other problems :-(.
I have never made a cake in the slow cooker. I made bread in one though!
Bread, really?! Cool!
I’ve never baked a cake in a slow cooker, and it probably isn’t the first thing I’d try, but it does seem like a convenient way to cook soups and stews.
I know what you mean, Laura – which is why I had to try the brownies. I was pleased w/ the results and will probably try one of the cakes next. I think my favorite might be the hot beverages.
Wow! I’ve never baked a cake in a slow cooker, but I’m tempted to give it a try!
That’s why I had to try the brownies – couldn’t believe it would work! Yum!
I’d love to win your cookbook. My omni sister-in-law has your book & recently made the pumpkin pie pudding to take to a party. Everyone loved it!
Oh wow, another recipe to try! Thanks, Paula!
I love my slow cooker summer – winter. Makes my house smell good & is quick easy & YUM!!!!!!!!!!
I would love to have more ideas for my slow cookers (only 3, plus a rice cooker with slow cooking capability, according to the packaging). They sit there unused, waiting for inspiration to strike. Thanks for sharing.
Nows the time to fire ’em up :-)!!
Adding–I’ve never baked a cake in the slow cooker.
Oh yeah – and I’ve made a “cake” topped cobbler, and a molten chocolate lava cake-like thing in my slow cookers, but haven’t made one I could pull out.
Oh wow…You are light years ahead of me ;-)!!
I’ve never baked (anything!) in a slow cooker. I’ve been wanting to try, though. 🙂
Here’s your chance! Good luck!
Thanks for the chance(s)!
I can safely say that I’ve never baked a cake in a slow cooker. That would be a new one for me!! Congrats on your year blog anniversary! I really enjoy what you’re doing. Great work!
Thanks, Cadry! I appreciate that!
Looks like a great resource for sure Annie! Happy (late) one year anniversary (again!) 🙂
I’m deep in slow-cooker mode lately ;-)! Thanks, Shira!
Happy anniversary! 🙂
This is an awesome book! I bought it at the beginning of fall to try and make weeknight dinners easier. Excellent book for a giveaway.
Thank you kindly! Love it when meals make themselves ;-)!
You have made some awesome stuff from this!! You are a kitchen creating monster!! The good kind of course! 😉
The kind that ate everything she created!!
I checked this out from the library but it was summer so I didn’t really take advantage of it. I think I may need it for thanksgiving. I hear there’s going to be a lot of great food to enjoy!
And yes, I have baked several things in a slow cooker – cakes, breads, bread puddings…yummy.
Apparently I need to bake some bread in mine! Bread pudding – that totally makes sense.
I need to ask Somer what I can contribute – I’m sure she will have an incredible feast. Maybe some of it will come from one of her many slow cookers ;-).
Oh wow this book has it all my friend 🙂
Happy blogaversary! You are a vegan hero!
Choc Chip Uru
Indeed – a one-stop slow cooker book!
I have never baked a cake in a slow cooker before…. sounds difficult!
Haha – yeah – if you don’t do it right I’m sure it sticks all over the place!
Never made a cake in the slow-cooker but I have in a microwave rice cooker 🙂
That’s a new one for me! Wow!
my brain doesn’t process recipes’ too well but that’s what i have my husband for (i do better watching videos)– this is a great thing! i have done the slow cooking with meat when i ate it and cooking beans but mostly since i became a herbivore i only use it for beans. good to know there’s so much more i could be using it for!
It’s crazy how much you can make in a slow cooker. This cookbook covers all meals!
I’ve never baked a cake in a slow cooker and didn’t even know that was a thing! I want to try it.
Hehe, I know, right? Too interesting NOT to try!
Also, I have one slow cooker. Haven’t used it much but I’m hoping to fix that with this cookbook. (I’m not sure if I’m supposed to answer that question here?
I use mine in phases – but always appreciate how handy it is. Thanks for entering, Brandy, and good luck!
I have never made cake in a slow cooker. But it sounds crazy and amazing. 🙂
Haha! Yes, a good way to describe it!
I have never made a cake in a slow cooker. But it sounds crazy and awesome. 🙂
We all need to try it, I think ;-)!
I really really want this book! I love the idea of the crock pot, and I have one, but I always forget about it and never really use it. I want to, though! Whenever I do, I am always amazed at how easy whatever I made was, lol. I have never made a cake in it before…I have seen recipes for them, but I have always wondered if it would really work?? I would love to try it 🙂
I guess it works! You’ve gotta use that slow cooker more, Courtney! With any luck, you’ll win the book and be all set!
I am a little confused about the raffle thingy, but there was a question about how many slow cookers you own? Do we answer that here as well? I own 1. How many do you need, lol?!?
Yeah, my first time using Rafflecopter so I have no idea what I’m doing! Seems to be working for the most part.
I’ve ever made a cake – only soups, stews, that kind of thing 🙂
Time to branch out, Em!
Her book is great – and Kathy is just the sweetest person in person 🙂
I love my crock pot and would LOVE this book! I’m entering Rafflecopter! Fall is definitely crock pot season for me – but I’ve never baked a cake in the crockpot. How neat!
Mmmm, a nice spiced apple cake for fall – in the crock pot! Good luck, Lolly!
I’ve never baked a cake in a crockpot but I would definitely try! Plus if it were a failure that just means I get to eat sugar-mush with a spoon… 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway!
It’s true – what else could you do?! And then you’d have to try, try again!
I’ve never baked a cake in a slow cooker. I’ve only made soups and stews. I guess I need to broaden my horizons
So far most people have NOT baked a cake in a slow cooker. Including me (do brownies count??)!
I never knew you could bake a cake in a crock pot. How cool! I will totally try it.
It’s like a science experiment that you can eat ;-)!
Cake in a slow cooker 😉
I know! Someone had to try it – and I’ll bet the first attempts were pretty messy ;-)!
I would totally love to win this cookbook. I bought a slowcooker because of a recipe that Kathy Hester once posted on her blog but I’ve only used the slow cooker like once or twice since then. I need more recipe ideas 🙂
You’ll be all set to slow-cook if you win!
yay happy one year anniversary 🙂 I have this cookbook too and love it!
Thanks, Gabby! Mine is getting some good use, that’s for sure.
I’ve never baked a cake in a slow cooker, but my husband is always telling me about the black forest cakes he used to make in a camping dutch oven. I should suggest he try it in the slow cooker!
Mmmm, black forest cake…Get him going on that slow cooker ;-)!
So funny! I just put this book on my Christmas list. Looks like a fantastic resource and with your recommendation it is now even better!
Ohh this book sounds amazing!! I have never baked in a slow cooked but far out I would love to try it! What a gorgeous christmas gift this book would be! 🙂
Best of luck winning the copy, Lisa!!
Hey lady, congratulations on your first year anniversary. How nice of you to celebrate it by giving this book away. You sure are well on your way to being a star, I can tell these things. 🙂
Thank you, thank you! I made it ;-)!
I love my slow cooker and have lost a lot of motivation for making dinner! What you’ve made and shared with us looks pretty great!
Also, I have made a chocolate/peanut butter “spoon cake” in my slow cooker and it was soooo good (as is anything choc + pb!).
Whoa – what?! That sounds awesome!!
I have only made soups, stews & chili in my crock-pot. I’m intrigued by the idea of using it for baking!
Me, too! Sounds too weird not to try!
This book has been on my covet list for a while. I used a slowcooker a lot more before we went plant-based, I guess I was at a loss for ideas. I’ve recently come up with several recipes I want to try but I’ve never made a cake or anything sweet except oatmeal in my slow cooker.
I love that this book covers it all. If you don’t win the copy, it’s definitely worth picking up to add to your library.
OOO this is on my wishlist!
Sorry hit enter too soon. I have not made a cake in my slow cooker. Just soups, chilis, and oatmeal. 🙂
Time to try, right ;-)?
Cool! Good luck!
I have never baked a cake in a slowcooker. This book looks great!
Thanks for entering the contest, Angela!
Oh I totally love slow cookers. I think I need this book!
I think you do, too!!
Just used my crockpot for the first time ever. sat in the kitchen and watched it for at least 3 hours thinking it was going to set fire or explode. hahah i think i will relax eventually though
I know exactly how you felt – – I did the same thing recently with an old slow cooker that I’d never used before. The sides felt unusually hot so I had a big space cleared all around it “just in case.” Thankfully, it worked just fine.
what fantastic photos and a beautiful looking book! Thanks for the share and the giveaway, Annie!!!
Wow – baking a cake in a slow cooker is genius! Definitely on my to do list now!
Hehe – I know, Julie! I think a lot of people are now looking at their slow cookers with new eyes!
I’ve never cooked with a slow cooker before but if I was to the first thing I would try is to bake a cake! 🙂 What beautiful pictures.
Thank you, Alana!

I’ve never even heard of baking a cake in a slow cooker, but I would love to try it! I wouldn’t mind sampling those brownies too. =)
I know, crazy, right? And I can attest that the brownies are good!
Love this book!!!!!
i wanna win!
Go for it, Jenn!!
I could really use this cookbook – I have a slow cooker that’s mostly been gathering dust in the year since I received it!
Oh you gotta use the slow cooker, Kelly!! This book will totally inspire you. Thanks for entering ;-)!
I have never baked a cake in the crockpot, but I have tried in a rice cooker 🙂
Tried ;-)? How did it go? Hard to imagine!
More like a good old British steamed pudding – not really cake-like, but still pretty good 🙂
Sounds pretty darn good!
I went ahead and ordered it; if I’m lucky enough to win a copy, then I’ll have two!
Most of all, I’ve gotten so incensed by my roommate using the slow cooker to cook nothing but pot roast or beef stew, it would be wonderful to make something meat-free in it.
Yes! Fight back with cruelty-free, slow-cooked deliciousness! Thanks for entering the contest, too ;-)!
Happy Blogiversary!! I have had this cookbook on my wish list for a while and would love to win it.
Thanks, Grace! How nice if your “wish” came true! Good luck!
Apparently I get a Rafflecopter Merit Badge or something for saying whether I ever made a cake in a slow cooker, so: I just made this stuff with the exact texture of cornbread. Only it was supposed to be vegan meatloaf! So you be the judge, folks. 😉 And will this UK expat be debarred from Thanksgiving dinner for suggesting that cornbread is “cake”??
Congratulations to an oasis of friendly sanity amid the loony crapola that is the Web!
Hi Steve – Glad to hear you are well on your way to earning your Rafflecopter merit badge ;-)! Best of luck in taking home the prize. I say that you should be most welcome at any T-day feast – a good cornbread indeed should be very cake-like!
I can’t imagine a slow-cooker brownie recipe! I want to get the book just to try that out. Thanks for posting, great pics!
PS – I couldn’t answer the rafflecopter question in the pop-up box so here’s my answer: I only own one slow-cooker 🙂
Oops, sorry it didn’t work, Jennifer, but thanks for answering. If you win this cookbook, you may just need one or two more slow cookers!
I couldn’t either which is why I had to try it! The house smelled wonderfully while it cooked.
