This warm weather drink is an “outtake” recipe from my upcoming cookbook, Crave Eat Heal; just couldn’t squeeze it in, so I thought I’d share it here.  This rich drink is not quite thick enough to be a full-on shake (unless you use frozen bananas), but is rather a “shookie” – a cross between a shake and a smoothie.

You’ll need ground cacao, hazelnut meal, and quite possibly chocolate tea like this one.

Smooth + Creamy + Chocolate + Hazelnut. Adds up to one delicious and refreshing smoothie, er, shake, er shookie!


  • 1/2 cup hazelnut meal
  • 1 cup non-dairy milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 ripe bananas (frozen, if desired – you will need more liquid, however)
  • 1 cup chocolate ice cubes* (56 cubes)
  • 3 Tbsp. cocoa or cacao powder
  • 6 dates (less if using Medjools)
  • Pure maple syrup, to taste


  1. Put the hazelnut meal and about 1/2 cup of the non-dairy milk in a high-speed blender and process to further break down the meal. It doesn’t need to be super smooth yet. Add the remaining ingredients and continue to process until silky smooth. Taste and adjust for sweetness. Serve.


  • *To make chocolate ice cubes, brew up some ground cacao. I put 5 Tbsp. ground cacao in a French press and pour 1 1/2-2 cups very hot water on top; brew for 5 minutes, then press and pour the liquid into a measuring cup. Let the liquid cool and then pour into ice cube molds. Freeze for several hours. You could also brew some chocolate tea, such as this, this or this.

      Do you have a “go to” smoothie that you love? I have a smoothie every morning and when I’m brain dead I always make a pineapple/banana/ginger/greens smoothie.

    Sorry I’m so behind on blog reading! This shookie looks so good Annie, I absolutely love chocolate and hazelnut together…I can only imagine how delicious both the smell and taste is. Love the addition of hazelnut meal!

    Since I don’t have chocolate ice cubes yet, I am going to toss in a tablespoon of chia seed in with the nut meal and use plain old crushed ice. The ground chia will hold it together and I can have one right now!
